How To Lengthen Shelf Life Of Cakes, Cookies and Brownies

So you bought a cake for a party and you are left with so many slices that you are not going to have in the next upcoming days.

But cakes have a short shelf life. How do you lengthen them?

Here are our tips!

For cakes, generally oil based cakes have a longer shelf life than butter based cakes.

Uncut cakes: Cling wrap the sides before storing in the fridge.

Cut cakes: Cling wrap each slice and store in an airtight container before storing in the fridge.

These would roughly prolong the cakes for another 2 days

For brownies, they typically last way longer but with similar storage as you would with cakes.

Uncut brownies: Cling the whole brownie before storing in the fridge.

Cut brownies: Cling wrap each slice and store in an airtight container before storing in the fridge.

The best thing about brownies is, that you can keep them in the freezer too, generally to extend up to a month or more.

Cut/Uncut brownies: Cling wrap each piece, wrap in aluminium foil and store in an airtight container before storing in the freezer.

To defrost, the night before, move the brownies from the freezer to the fridge and then to room temperature.

Just a reminder, that the longer your keep the brownies or cakes in the fridge or freezer, the longer you have to defrost them. I personally think it is always better to defrost naturally rather than microwaving them.

For cookies, it all depends on the texture.

To store chewy cookies, keep them in air tight container with a piece of bread. The moisture from the bread will help the cookies to stay chewy for longer.

If they ended up stale, just place the cookies on a plate together with a mug filled with hot water. Microwave them for a few minutes and your cookies are chewy and soft back again!

To store crispy cookies, keep them in air tight container as well.

If they ended up stale, just place the cookies on a baking tray and bake them for a few minutes.

You can also freeze finished cookies in the freezer, just make sure that you slip in baking paper between each layer of cookies, in an airtight container. To enjoy them, the night before, move the cookies from the freezer to the fridge and then to room temperature.

Freezing cookies can lengthen their shelf life for a few months.

We hope that these tips help! My personal favourite is definitely freezing the brownies and softening cookies in the microwave.
